Private Literary Club

Connecticut

This project renovated significant portions of an historic clubhouse with an eclectic range of architectural styles.  Originally constructed as a private home c.1815, the house was converted into a private club in 1911, with some rooms renovated in a Jacobean/Elizabethan style, and others retaining their original Federal character.

The present work reconfigured a segregated suite of spaces formerly used as a residential apartment for the club’s steward, reconnecting those rooms with the rest of the clubhouse and endowing them with an architectural character inspired by the eclectic design of the historic club rooms. The project also created a new kitchen, administrator’s office, cloak room, and wheelchair lift.
